One of the biggest secrets of the St. Lawrence : the nineteenth century quarantine island Grosse-Île has been named a National Historic Site by Parks Canada. For a long time it was shrouded in mystery. Because of its role in both human and animal quarantine, trespassers were discouraged from landing there. Between 1832 and 1937 Grosse Ile was a transition point for four million immigrants, a quarantine station to prevent the spread of epidemics in Canada. |
